Triplets on a Plane: Flight to the West

Well the big day arrived on Sunday, May 24th.. our trip out to Utah! Eric and I were up at 4:30am to make the last minute preparations. We got the babies up a little while later to be changed and put in their car seats. I'm sure they were wondering what on earth was going on as they had never been taken from their cribs while still asleep before! In order to fit everyone (and everything) into the van, we had to install their new car seats and aligned them along the back row. Actually, we managed to keep Kiera's infant carrier in with Jamison and Krista's new seats along side so all three fit across the back bench. Then Eric and I sat in the middle and my parents sat in the front. A big thanks to Poppy for driving us to the airport!

Here's a photo of the babies bright and early in their seats.

Kiera was super sleepy and wasn't quite sure what was going on!

Jamison was looking "Super Cool" in his new seat!

Krista looked like a "Princess" in her seat.

We had a 45 minute drive ahead of us to go to the airport, letting the babies get a little more sleep before the big flight. Once we arrived at the airport, we immediately got a lot of stares from people. We would have been a sight just with the 3 babies alone but then add a double stroller, a single stroller, 3 large suitcases, 2 carry-on suitcases, 2 backpacks and a striped diaper bag! We were quite the sight! We managed to get over to check-in without much trouble and then had fun going through security. They had to test all of the bottles of water we brought as well as the formula and jars of baby food. It took a few minutes while that was being done but the security people were very nice and had all kinds of questions and comments about the triplets.

We had just enough time before boarding the plane to feed the babies their morning bottles and change diapers. Each of the adults had an assigned "lap baby" as the term is called. Krista was with Daddy, Jamison with Mommy and Kiera with Nonna. Because there are only 4 oxygen masks in each row, we weren't able to sit together. I was in the front row with Eric and my mom behind me 2 rows. It ended up working out fine except it was a pain not being able to have the diaper bag in front of me because it was the bulkhead area and no space for carry-on baggage. I insisted that I needed a bottle from the bag before it got put in an overhead compartment several rows back but the male flight attendant wasn't cooperating. I had to go grab it out myself, knowing that Jamison would need something to suck on during take-off since he doesn't take a pacifier like his sisters.

I had been nervous about Jamison flying on the plane because I thought he would be frightened my the noises but I was pleasantly surprised! He did great and was very interested in everything that was going on around him. Krista, as we suspected, was a wiggle worm and wanted to get down. Kiera, who we thought would be the best, ended up being the fussiest but she also seemed to enjoy people watching as they walked up and down the aisle to and from the lavatory. After about an hour into our flight, the babies started falling asleep, one by one. Jamison and Krista slept for well over an hour but Kiera probably only slept about 20 minutes. We had plenty of toys, snacks and Baby Einstein to go around to keep the babies entertained.

We survived our flight to Denver, got some grub for the adults, fed the babies and changed more diapers and then it was time to fly to Salt Lake City! I had a nice lady and her 11 year old son sitting next to me on that flight. The woman had offered to hold him while I put my seatbelt on and he ended up sitting with her the whole flight. He also took a little cat nap! The girls were active and anxious to get off the plane. Thank goodness the flight was only an hour long! When we landed, Jamison clapped his hands to celebrate our arrival, so cute!

Eric's dad was ready to pick us up from the airport with our niece, Sarah, and Eric's aunt and uncle, Tom and Judy. We were fortunate enough to be able to borrow Eric's dad's van for the duration of our trip and had car seats already installed in the vehicle, thanks to Eric's sister, Julie, that was such a lifesaver and a money saver! We got everyone and everything loaded up and headed south to Eric's mother's house where we crashed for the rest of the day! It was a long trip travelling over 2,000 with triplets in tow and we were grateful to just relax.

Wow! I can only imagine the planning you had to do for that trip! Good for you! Sounds like you had a good time and the babies did great!
