Synagis Round 2 + a bonus

My mother was kind enough to come with me to take the babies to receive their second round of Synagis since Eric is out of town for a few days for business. Going anywhere is a production and today was no different.

After feeding the babies, loading them up, driving them to the "bigger and better" location of our pediatrician's office the next town over and waiting for 20 minutes to be seen, we were finally taken to a room the size of a Cracker Jack box where each baby was weighed to determine the proper dosage of medicine.

Krista - 15 lbs., 2 oz.

Jamison - 15 lbs., 1 oz.

Kiera - 12 lbs. 3.5 oz.

After being weighed, we had to wait what seemed like an eternity for the nurse to return to give the babies their dreaded shots. Jamison was having an especially difficult time waiting so I ended up holding him for most of the time while the girls laid on the examination table admiring themselves in the side mirror.

The nurse returned and decided to use the space where Jamison was once positioned as her "work" space directly in between Krista and Kiera. Her plan was to give Krista the shot in each of her thighs and then move on to Kiera. When Krista got her first shot, Kiera started to cry as well. We figured this was just sympathy crying, since they tend to do this often. However, when Kiera did not stop crying after Krista's shots had been administered and Krista had started to calm down, we discovered what Kiera's true crying was all about. Going to calm Kiera down, my mother found her with one of the needles stuck into her little hand! No wonder she was crying!

The nurse said she had never had such a thing happen before...I would hope not but it seems to me that such a thing should have never happened, especially at my daughter's expense. Isn't there a cap on the syringe that should remain on until the nurse is ready to give the injection? Anyhow, it took Kiera about 5 minutes to calm down before the poor baby had to actually get her Synagis shots! Jamison, too, received his two pricks and then we had to spend some more time consoling the babies enough to get them settled back into their car seats and out to the car.

I'm very grateful that the babies are receiving these shots for RSV but I'd love to be spared the drama next time. Unfortunately, we're about to have a change in health insurance beginning January 1st and will have to go through a bunch of red tape trying to get these shots approved again for the babies due to their prematurity in time to have Round 3 within the administration window period. Wish me luck!

I would have been so upset with that nurse that I would have said something to the doctor and would not want her as a nurse again. I'm glad the triplets are doing well. Hope that you have an easier time next time. Good luck with the insurnces.

wow, what a horrible story! I can't believe the nurse was that irresponsible - my husband is a pharmacist and he was mortified hearing that!

I am so impressed at how big your babies are! At 5 months, my triplets were all in single digits still.

I think I would have lost it on that nurse. There should have been a cap on that needle up to the point of injection! Poor baby!

For the record, the nurse felt really bad and she's lucky my husband out of town because he would have thrown a royal fit. I will be complaining though when I set up the next appointment as we had to go to the "bigger and better" location further away just to have to wait longer, having a tiny room and a bad nurse!

So sorry! Reminds me when I was in AAMC after a difficult procedure, laying in the bed attached to an IV. The nurse tripped over the cord, ripping the IV from my arm, blood spurting out across the room. I was so upset and insulted after all that I could hardly look at her. I just cried. Poor peanut.
