Halloween 2009

This was the first Halloween that we took the trio out Trick or Treating and we had a lot of fun! However, there was a lot of work that went into getting ready for our big debut.

One of Eric's favorite holidays is Halloween and he's always taken great pride into creating his own costumes over the years. We had gone to Old Navy in September and bought 3 dalmatian costumes when they were on sale in combination with a $10 off coupon so I was pretty excited. Then a couple of days later, we were at Target and spotted a firefighter costume in Jamison's size so we decided right then and there that we would return his dalmatian costume and convert our beloved choo choo wagon into a fire truck. This satisfied Eric very much because he was able to use his creative and technical abilities to enhance the Halloween experience for our children! He even took some time off from his job to make sure the fire truck turned out absolutely perfect. He had access to some sturdy cardboard boxes from his work that he painstakingly measured, cut and crafted into covers for each of the choo choo cars that fit like a glove. He even created a hood that bumped out on the front. Once completed, we spray painted the parts fire engine red.

I didn't really take pictures of the entire process, which I probably should have but here's what it looked like when we took the babies to the Trunk or Treat activity at our church on October 28th. We got a lot of attention and the babies loved sitting in their pimped out ride all decked out in the costumes, even though they didn't have a clue what was going on!


My father and I had the job of detailing the fire truck to add the finishing touches. Eric also made sure all of the lighting was in place. I was especially pleased at our fire hose hookups made from disposable muffin tins. We used flashlights for the headlights, found a blue police flashing light at a Halloween store that we put some red LEDs in, added strobe lights to the sides of the engines (that we scored at Target for $2 each) and then red, flashing safety lights (manufactured for kids to use while Trick or Treating) as the tail lights. The three of us made a great team!


My mother was itching to show off the babies in her neighborhood where I grew up so I obliged, even though it required more walking since the houses are further apart and the driveways are rather lengthy. It ended up being a good thing though because we were many of the people's only trick or treaters and they were quite tickled to see the triplets they had been hearing so much about! The only downside was that by the time we got over there and the converted choo choo assembled, it began raining. At least it was not a heavy rain! It was also pretty warm out but the babies didn't seem to be uncomfortable in their costumes. Well, I take part of that back... Jamison did NOT want to wear his fireman's hat!

Once we went around to about a half dozen homes there, we headed back home to hit up our little court. We parked the fire engine for a pit stop so the babies could drink their evening milk.

Back to more Trick or Treating!

The kids had a great time riding around and waving to the neighbors.

They were worn out by the time we got home though and were ready to go in the house. It was past their bedtime but the girls were very interested in checking out their loot! They started by reaching out and pulling the candy out one by one, carefully inspecting each piece.

After a couple of minutes of doing that, they figured out how to dump all of the candy on the floor. Jamison was quick to come over once he discovered all of the treats out for the taking!

While I was getting pictures taken with the camera, they managed to start nibbling on some Reese's peanut butter cups! I started freaking out because they have never had peanut butter before and since it's such a serious allergy for little ones, I took them away but quickly broke open a Kit Kat to split 3 ways before calling it a night.

Here's the crew in their costumes minus Jamison's boots. They really looked super cute even though they all wouldn't look all look at the camera at the same time!

Now we really need to start getting the wheels turning for next year because we set the bar pretty high this year but we're up for the challenge!
